Obama sin laden?

small_obama_image.jpg

Ok, totally random title and it’s really got nothing to do with this post, I just thought it was an obvious (albeit not very clever) play on words and I had fun making the photo (I know – I don’t get out much). I was going to try to come up with some clever way of comparing/contrasting the two individuals but I couldn’t think of anything. Although think about it – have you ever seen the two of them together…..?

I am not into politics in general and I know very little about American politics. What I do know is from asking my wife annoying questions when watching the West Wing. I know little about Barack Obama and next to nothing about his policies. But after watching this and hearing some of his speeches I’d vote for him.

His opponents claim that there’s nothing more to him than being a good speaker. Well, that’s enough for me. Ok, so that’s easy for me to say but maybe what the American people really need is to be given hope and to be inspired, more than promises of tax cuts or better healthcare or better education. A few inspired people with hope for a better future can change the world. Probably that’s naive but given the support Bush has had over the years, just think what any future American president who can string more than 3 words together could do.

Or if you don’t like that, this is another alternative!

I hadn’t seen the second one – very good.

Reluctantly, I am starting to get swept up by Obama-mania. I have done some research and there is (some) substance behind the words. I believe he is closest candidate to Jed Bartlett in terms of ideals – although how do you think that will really play away from the east and west coasts when people are standing in their voting booths?

Also, does anyone think an immediate withdrawal from Iraq is a good thing for any country other than America? McCain is wrong – America shouldn’t have invaded Iraq and there needs to be a definitive end-strategy, but America is where it is. It has made a commitment to help rebuild that nation and needs to see that through beyond where things are now. The situation has improved there, largely because the increases troop commitments of the USA.

One thing though – Scarlett Johansson may be inspiring in many ways, but I would not choose a candidate on the basis of celebrity endorsement. If Bono released ‘In the name of the DUP’, would you vote for Gregory Campbell?

Right with you on the value of inspiration. You can make an interesting case that in terms of policy delivery Thatcher, Reagan and Blair v.1 were actually pretty calamitous but they had a communicative genius which transformed the way people thought about themselves and their society (for better or worse).

I recommend Barack Obama’s 1995 memoir Dreams from My Father. He got the book deal because after becoming the first black editor of the Harvard Law Review, not because he was running for office. His recent Audacity of Hope is an artful appeal for hopes, but DfMF is a searing work of self-examination – exactly the type of thing a presidential candidate shouldn’t be caught doing but we’re glad he did.

I understand all the questions about whether there is substance behind the Obama style.

But I also agree that we often underestimate the power and value of good rhetoric. Words used well can inspire people to hopeful action and do real good. The US president especially has a highly symbollic role as “leader of the free world”, and their posture and manner and language when they speak actually make a difference. Words seasoned with humility and grace and hope can bring real healing and change.

Of course some good policies can help too…

i agree Jaber… rhetoric is important.. the power of words and insiration… look at Hitler.. (whoops). there was a disscussion maybe on this blog or another which i gatecrashed – in which i said pretty much what you have.

the reposte was along the lines of ’sound bite politics!’ which is a fair point.
